About my essay,I’m going to talk about what kind of researcher I am and the influence from other artists’ research. The whole text will be divided into four parts.
Part1
The first part is the introduction about art research, like what research can do and its importance. Many artists are focusing on research, they think research is necessary and a good research will help a lot for future works, for example research can show us a direction for our outcomes and inspire us a lot.
Part2
Through this term,I learned a lot on how to research.I’m going to talk about my learning based on time.
1.At the beginning of this unit,I was quite new in this area,I usually felt lost about our assignments and I seldom do too much resarch.
Why I felt lost? What difficulties I meet? How they affected me?
Compare with other examples who don’ t do research, what have I lost?
2.After I watched the documentary about Rachel Mclean’s working process,I was inspired a lot.I noticed that the research may be the most important and funny part of the whole work.During the research, you can do a lot of trials and learn more about a new thing, that’s really excited.
Compared with past what ideas I can get from the research?
2 artists’ works witch has interesting research process, and what I learn.
Why is research so important? And what kind researcher I am ?
Part3
Now I understand why my tutors keep telling us to do research.
Summarize the benefits and changes that the research brings to me.
What I have learn and how to continue my future work?
On today’s session,we watched three vedios about three artists, their working style and process are very different.
The first artist is Olafur Eliasson,he is famous of his sculptures and large-scale installations. The film about Olafur shows his mind of creation and the main idea of his work is about people’s emotion and the reflection from nature.Sometimes, our surrounding can reflect our emotion needs, that’s true, most of time,we may be affected by the environment. Many art works are focusing on people’ feeling now, cause its a easy way to arouse people feel the same thing.
The second artist is Robin Rhode, his art works are made up with wall painting and human body movement, his idea is very interesting,he usually engages those people who dont’t have works to work for him.Robin’s team is really a big one,and its a good example for team working, also its a good chance to train new artists. His working process is more focusing on the team working, the process itself is how the work to communicate with others.
The third artists is Louise Despont, she lives in Bali and enjoys the relaxable life there. Her works are about her lifestyle and those experience she has,she is trying to let audience feel the same peace with her ‘visual memory’.The process of her works is almost her peaceful life in Bali and her emtions, also, the way of her work showing is a part of process.
After I watched those three vedios,I noticed that many of the inspiration is come from our daily life, and we can take the process step by step. The reason why the process is so important is because it is mixed with our observation and accumulation of daily life, and it is also mixed with the emotions of ourselves. Because of the process, our thoughts will exist in every corner of the work, and our works will be full of details to engage more people feel about it.
On Wednesday,we visited three gallerys, the first gallery is called Victoria Miro Gallery we visited Doug Aitken’s work inside it.There are three parts of the whole exhibition,in the lower gallery ,the main work is All doors open.
When the first time I saw it,I thought it is really an amazing work, the changing lightning is very impressive. The whole work is like a woman is kneeling on the table and leaving her phone on the other side.In my opinion, the distance between she and her phone is a kind of peace and silence, run away from the ‘virtual reality’ and have a rest in the real world.Indeed, our world is deceloping faster than before,it’s very difficult to push the ‘pause’ button in our life, but this work gives us a feeling of time frozing and a short rest.
Around the installation, there are four big lightboxes, each of them is image about our daily life.
I think those images have some connections with the All doos open,it’s like after slowing down in our life we can enjoy those normal views, because before that ,the more common things are, the easier it is for us to ignore them.
On the upper gallery, the big work is called Inside out. There is a model on the middle of the floor and a big sreen behind it,between the model and the screen there are two installations .When we were watching it , the change of light caused me a lot of attentions, also the static model and the strong background music made a sharp contrast. Also, oppsite those installations, there is a big mirror, this whole work has the power to force you thinking about silence inside a noisy environment,it’s like is the world in the mirror real or is the world with background music real ?
We also went to Jewood Arts, the film ‘Feel My Metaverse: mind, body and screen‘ also left me a deep impression.
This film bases on future frame, and illustrates three diffrent world, and different charactors living experience,in this film, charactors learn and feel the world by role playing.Actually, because of the language,it’s hard for me to understand everything of this film,I could only know the frame of it.In my opinion, the main idea is to tell us how to tell what is real and what isn’t,in the second half of this film, one of these charactors mentions that question.
Basically, those exhibitions are about the connection between emotions and the reality.Nowadays, people are more foucusing on those unreal things, such and many of them are important to us,such as the internet,we usually like to enjoy the communication with others online and ignore the face-to-face talking in our real life,as a result,we may take less care of our real nature—who we really are.In my opinion, what we touch and what we feel make us to be the reality–a real person, and we can feel the world in our own ways, cause the most magical thing is everyone’s thought is different and that create a fantastic world. However,if we addicte to the unreal world,we may ignore many beutiful views and lose ourselves,it’s important to keep balance between the real and the unreal.
On today’s session,we had a lecture with two artists. The first artrist– Marta di Francesco talked about her digital art works which are related to dancers.
She is usually inspired by those dancers body movements and uses the movement to creat work with some special softwares(especially the DEPTH KIT).Her works are full of future sense and with a lot of techniques, the appearance of her work is made of moving lines, very lively and special. The key word of her work is ‘threads’,which means existence as a piece of fabric that has many interwoven metaphysical threads.During the projrct ‘JANUS’,she did a lot of research at many areas, such as the museum collections and books, before she started, she recorded a large amount of thoughts. Also, she is trying to add some new technique into her work, such as VR.
The second artist is Tamara Kamatani, the works she introduced today are about Google Maps.
This art work is made up with digital sea image and a bench, and they are from the same area. She used two versions of the sea to creat a work.By transforming the sea into a serene image, we seem to be surrounded by the ocean, this method is directly and very interesting.
To be honest, the two artists’ speaking made me think a lot, since their works are all related to digital form, they must have tried many technical methods, also for them failure is a very common thing. However, when it comes to me,I several do attempt on different ways,so most of the time,my work is lack of details, because there is less trial process. This made me realize that even failure is also important, cause failure is also a kind of research, and can show me what to do next.
At same time,I should pay more attention on work it self, and not thinking like a expert, when I get some ideas i should record them then just try and practice them.,this can help me to enrich my thinking process. So my next step is trying to make a detailed work with full of thoughts.
On monday’s session,we talked about the text ‘Athleisure, barre and kale: the tyranny of the ideal woman’.
What are the points Jia Tolentino is trying to make?
Well,in my opinion, the author wants to tell us,most of the time,we have a goal or a purpose, but that is not our voluntary. For example,in this text, many women choose to go to the gym, as result, they may have a perfect bofy shape, but the truth is,they are forced by the society, they are watching by other people. That is a quite interesting phenomenon,it looks like a good body shape isn’t what they really want, because of the social standard, they have to go to gym and try to be ideal women, and if you are not,you will be negatived by others.
What does the text make you think about?
So this text makes me feel about being an ideal person is very difficult and exhausting. In this text, ideal women must spend a lot of time and vigor to maintain their outlooking and keep a good impression for others. Also, this reminds me about ‘group psycology’,for example, there 100 people in the same room, and 99 people choose to sit on the floor, and if you don’t follow them and you just stand on the floor, you will be the most strange one,so it’s hard not to follow the society.
What have you learnd from this text?
I think the most important thing is that we should be brave to represent our nature, don’t focus on other people’s thinking about you, just be ourselves!Actually I don’t have a really strong personality, but I still want to try several things:
1.No matter how tough the future will be,keep being myself.
2.Best efforts for every possible thing.
3.Don’t care about other people’s thinking, unless they are good advices for me.
Everyday, our people may have many emotions, most of the time, emotions are kind of feelings, you can’t express or pronounce them.Sometimes,we even don’t know which emotion we are having right now and why they come up.
Since I was an adult, I have faced different things every day, and everything can trigger my different emotions. I can no longer be as carefree as I was when I was a child, and I can’t pretend that nothing happened. When I grow up, I learn how to face these things and how to control my emotions every day.But not every time I can talk to others about my emotions, when I face it alone, I can only express them in my mind and turn them into silence.Try to imagine that, shout or laugh without sound, what a strange scene. So I tried to show those scenes with images, and also express the feelings.
I tried to draw like Keith Haring, because lines have great power and very easy to draw.I drew lines in three specific shapes, those shapes are like our differet types of life, life is a box,a circle,we never jump out of it.
Two weeks ago,we watched a film about an artist’s work about a shopping centre, and our homework was making an outcome about any shopping centre. At first I was confused about which shopping centre to go,after I talked with ny friends,we chose the LIBERTY Shopping Centre, because its special ‘inside’ and history.
I took many interesting pictures inside the building
When I was doing my work,I got inspired by the shopping centre’s name—LIBERTY and its logo,so I came up with this picture beblow ⬇
I united some elements which are related to this shopping centre, and arranged them.
After that I transfered this picture onto the paper.
After I got those photos from library,I tried to make some experiment with them.Due to the limited material,I made a picture montage by using software.
I used some pieces which was selected from those picture, and created a very bizarre world with them. The meaning of this image is:There is no limit on looking for the truth, even beyond the world we live in.In my opinion,’looking for the truth’is a process of critical thinking,on today’s session I learned we need keep thinking and always questioning. In the past, when I did my art work,I really didn’t have too many thoughts, and my work was limited, but now, since I am already a graduate student, I should exercise my critical thinking more than before, and try to jump out the traditional thinking, make more different works.
Last weekend,i went to the school library and tried the same way we did in Elephant&Castle—–‘drifting’,and i took many interesting pictures.
